ZIP passwords: AES-256 vs ZipCrypto
When you protect a ZIP you pick one of two methods. Here is the difference in plain words.
AES-256 (recommended)
Modern, strong encryption. Use it for anything private. Most current tools such as 7-Zip, WinZip and macOS apps like Keka can open it. The built-in Windows and Mac unzip may not.
StrongZipCrypto (older)
The original ZIP password method. It opens almost everywhere, including built-in system tools, but it is weak and should not protect sensitive data.
Most compatibleUse a long password
12 or more characters, with words, numbers and symbols mixed.
Send it separately
Share the password by a different channel than the ZIP itself.
No recovery
If you forget the password, nobody can recover the files. Keep it safe.

Your files never leave your device
Many online tools send your archive to a server. This one does the work inside your browser tab.
Processed locally
Opening, previewing, editing and zipping all happen on your device.
No server copy
There is no upload step, so there is no copy of your files to delete later. Your password stays in your browser too.
Works after load
Once the page has loaded, the tool does not need the internet to process your files.
ZIP vs RAR vs 7z
Three common archive formats, and which one this tool opens.
ZIP
Created in 1989 and supported almost everywhere. Good compression, fast, and opens by double-click on Windows, Mac and ChromeOS.
Opens hereRAR
A proprietary format made with WinRAR. Often smaller files than ZIP, but slower and harder to create.
Not supported here7z
An open format that uses LZMA2. Very high compression, but you need 7-Zip or a similar tool.
Not supported hereHow it compares
An honest look. We focus on viewing and editing ZIPs, not on every archive format.

What this tool can and cannot do
So you pick the right tool for the job.
Can do
- Open standard .zip files, including encrypted ones
- Preview text, images, PDF, audio and video
- Edit text and code, then re-zip
- Add, remove and create files
- Create password-protected ZIPs
Cannot do (yet)
- Open RAR, 7z, TAR or GZ archives
- Edit images, PDFs or videos inside the ZIP
- Repair a badly damaged ZIP
- Handle huge files beyond your device memory
- Keep your edits after you close the tab
Is it safe to open a ZIP file?
A ZIP is only a container. What is inside decides the risk.
Know the sender
Only open ZIPs from people and sites you trust. Unexpected ZIPs in email are a common way to spread malware.
Watch the file types
Be careful with .exe, .bat, .js, .scr and .msi files inside a ZIP. Do not run them unless you are sure what they are.
Look before you extract
This tool lists and previews files without running them, so you can check what is inside first. Scan anything suspicious with antivirus software.
ZIP error messages explained
What the common errors mean and how to fix them.
“The compressed (zipped) folder is invalid”
The download was probably cut short or the file is damaged. Download it again, ideally on a stable connection.
“Unexpected end of archive”
The ZIP is incomplete. Ask the sender to resend it, or download it again.
“Destination path too long”
Windows limits very long file paths. Extract to a short folder such as C:\zip, or rename the ZIP to something shorter.
“Cannot open file as archive”
The file may not be a real ZIP. Check the extension. It could be a RAR or 7z file, which this tool does not open.
Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for the most common problems.
The ZIP will not open
The file may be damaged or not a real ZIP. Download it again and retry.
It asks for a password
Type it in the Unlock box. If it fails, check capital letters and spaces, then try again.
The page slows down
Very large ZIPs use a lot of memory. Close other tabs or try a smaller archive.
Text looks garbled
The file is probably binary, not text. Use Download instead of View.
My edits are missing
Press Save changes, then Download updated ZIP. Edits are not kept after you close the tab.
A PDF will not preview
Some phone browsers cannot show PDFs inline. Download the file and open it in your PDF app.
ZIP file facts worth knowing
Small details that save time.
Lossless
ZIP compression does not reduce quality. You get back exactly what you put in.
Not always smaller
JPG, MP4, MP3 and most PDFs are already compressed, so zipping them saves little space.
Size limits
The original ZIP format tops out at 4 GB and 65,535 files. The ZIP64 extension removes those limits.
Email friendly
Zipping bundles many files into one attachment. Most email services still cap attachment size, often near 25 MB.
Tips for smaller, cleaner ZIPs
Simple habits that make archives easier to share.
Name files clearly
Use short names without odd symbols, like report-2026.pdf. It avoids path and encoding problems.
Skip junk files
Remove .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and temp files before you share a ZIP.
Do not re-zip media
Photos and videos barely shrink. Compress images first if you need a smaller file.
Split big bundles
If an email limit blocks you, make two smaller ZIPs instead of one large one.
Add a README
A short note inside the ZIP tells people what each file is and how to use it.
Keep the original
This tool never changes your source file, so keep it until you have checked the new ZIP.

Questions people ask
Tap a question to see the answer.
Is this ZIP tool safe?
Yes. It runs in your browser, so your files are not uploaded to any server.
Can I edit a file inside a ZIP and save it back?
Yes. Open the ZIP, click View on a text or code file, click Edit, then Save changes. Finally click Download updated ZIP. Your original ZIP is not changed.
Which files can I preview?
Text and code files, images, PDF, audio and video. Other types can be downloaded but not previewed.
Can I open a password-protected ZIP?
Yes. When you open an encrypted ZIP, a box asks for the password. Both AES-256 and older ZipCrypto ZIPs work. The password is used only in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
Can I create a ZIP with a password?
Yes. Enter a password in the box above the file list, choose AES-256 (strong) or ZipCrypto (older, works with more tools), then click Download updated ZIP. Clear the box to remove protection from an opened ZIP.
Does it open RAR or 7z files?
Not yet. This tool handles standard .zip files.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but very large ZIPs depend on your device’s memory.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Any modern mobile browser works. Tap Open ZIP file and choose your archive.
How do I unzip a file on Windows 11?
Right-click the ZIP file, choose Extract All, pick a folder and click Extract. You can also open the ZIP in this online tool without extracting anything.
How do I open a ZIP file on iPhone?
Open the Files app, find the ZIP file and tap it. The contents appear in a new folder. You can also open it with the online tool on this page.
Can I open a ZIP file without WinZip?
Yes. Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Chromebook can open ZIP files without WinZip, and so can this free online tool.
Does zipping a file reduce its quality?
No. ZIP compression is lossless, so the files you extract are identical to the originals.
Why is my ZIP file not smaller than the original?
Files such as JPG, MP4, MP3 and many PDFs are already compressed, so ZIP can only shrink them a little. Text, code and documents usually shrink much more.
Is it safe to unzip files online?
A browser-based tool that does not upload your files is safer for private data. This tool processes everything on your device. Still, only open ZIP files from sources you trust and never run unknown programs from inside one.
How big can a ZIP file be?
The original ZIP format allows files up to 4 GB and 65,535 entries. ZIP64 removes those limits. In this tool, the practical limit is your device's memory.
Which password type should I choose?
Choose AES-256 for anything private. Choose ZipCrypto only if the person opening the ZIP uses an old tool that cannot read AES.
Will my edits be saved if I close the tab?
No. Nothing is stored on a server or in the browser. Always click Download updated ZIP before you leave the page.
Can I remove a password from a ZIP?
Yes, if you know the password. Open the ZIP, enter the password, clear the password box above the file list, then download the ZIP.
