Why Safe Zones Matter for Creators

Every platform overlays user interface elements on top of your thumbnails and videos. If you place your most important text, faces, or call-to-actions in these "danger zones," they will be covered up, leading to lower click-through rates (CTR) and engagement.

YouTube Safe Zones (16:9)

For standard YouTube videos, the primary obstruction is the video duration timestamp located in the bottom-right corner. Additionally, if your video is part of a playlist or has a "Watch Later" button, the top-right corner may also be obscured. Keep your main subject centered or in the top-left quadrant for maximum visibility.

TikTok & YouTube Shorts Safe Zones (9:16)

Vertical video platforms are much more aggressive with UI overlays. You must avoid:

  • The Right Edge: The column containing the Like, Comment, and Share buttons takes up about 15-20% of the right side.
  • The Bottom 25%: This area is reserved for your username, video caption, and the scrolling music/sound info.
  • The Top Edge: The "Following/For You" tabs and search icons can cover the very top of your video.

Pro Tip: The safest area for vertical content is the center-middle of the screen. Always preview your edits using this tool before exporting!
