Why you'd convert WebP to PNG

WebP is brilliant for the web — small, modern, and supported everywhere now. But the moment a file leaves the browser and heads into a pipeline that wasn't built for it, WebP can stumble. Print shops, older design apps, certain CMS uploaders, email templates, and a surprising number of "upload your logo" forms still expect a PNG or JPG and quietly reject WebP. Converting to PNG is the universal handshake: lossless, transparent, and understood by essentially everything that handles images at all.

Transparency survives the trip

One of the best reasons to land on PNG is alpha. A WebP with a cut-out background carries that transparency through the canvas and into the PNG untouched — no white halo, no flattened edges. The honest word on file size

Here's the part most converters won't tell you: a PNG is lossless, so for a photographic image it will usually be larger than the lossy WebP you started from. That's not a bug — it's the price of perfect pixels. If your goal is the smallest possible file for a photo on a webpage, keep the WebP. Convert to PNG when you need lossless quality, transparency in a PNG-only workflow, or compatibility with a tool that won't take WebP. Questions, answered

Will the PNG keep my transparent background?
Yes. Alpha transparency passes straight from the WebP through the canvas into the PNG, untouched. The checkerboard behind the preview shows exactly what is see-through before you download. Switch the transparency option off only if you want a solid white background baked in.
Why is the PNG bigger than my WebP?
PNG is lossless, so a photographic image stored losslessly is usually larger than a lossy WebP. That is expected, not a bug. Keep WebP when the smallest file size matters; convert to PNG when you need lossless quality, transparency, or compatibility with a tool that rejects WebP.
What image formats can I drop in?
Anything your browser can decode as an image: WebP, JPG, PNG, GIF, AVIF and BMP. They all come out as PNG. It is a one-way door into PNG, which is the whole point.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, drawing and encoding all happen inside the browser tab you are looking at, using the browser's own image engine. Nothing is sent to a server or stored; the file goes from your disk to your download and nowhere else.
