Buying a TV that's too big or too small for your room is one of the most common home theater mistakes. This calculator uses industry viewing-distance standards to tell you, in seconds, either the ideal TV size for where you sit or the ideal distance to sit from the TV you already have.

How the TV Size Calculator Works

This tool uses guidelines established by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and THX to give you the most cinematic and comfortable viewing experience possible.

  • For 4K UHD TVs: Because 4K has four times the pixels of 1080p, you can sit much closer without seeing the "screen door" pixel effect. The ideal distance is 1 to 1.5 times the diagonal TV size.
  • For 1080p FHD TVs: To avoid seeing individual pixels, you should sit further back. The ideal distance is 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal TV size.

  • 85-inch+ 4K TV: Best for a viewing distance of 7 to 11 feet. Delivers a true cinematic, immersive experience.

How to Measure Your TV's Screen Size

TV size is always measured as the diagonal length of the screen only — corner to corner, not including the plastic bezel around the edge. Measure from the top-left corner of the visible picture to the bottom-right corner (or top-right to bottom-left) for an accurate number, since the size printed on the box is always this diagonal measurement, not the width or height.

Choosing TV Size by Room

  • Bedroom: With shorter viewing distances (often 5–7 feet from the bed), a 43" to 55" 4K TV is usually the sweet spot.
  • Living Room: Most seating is 8–12 feet from the wall, which comfortably fits a 65" to 75" 4K TV.
  • Home Theater / Dedicated Media Room: With controlled lighting and distances of 10+ feet, 75" to 85"+ delivers the most cinematic result.

Does Room Lighting Affect TV Size Choice?

Yes. If your room has a lot of windows or bright ambient light, you may want to size up slightly or invest in a TV with high peak brightness (like QLED or Mini-LED) to combat glare. In a dark, dedicated home theater, you can comfortably size up even more for maximum immersion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far should I sit from a 65-inch 4K TV?
Between 5.4 feet (65 inches) and 8.1 feet (97.5 inches). This range lets you take in all the 4K detail without being able to make out individual pixels.

What size TV should I get for a 10-foot viewing distance?
For a 10-foot (120-inch) distance, an 80" to 85" TV is ideal if it's 4K UHD. If it's a 1080p set, aim for 55" to 65" instead.

Does 4K resolution change the recommended viewing distance?
Yes. A 4K panel packs four times the pixels of 1080p, so you can sit noticeably closer — about 1 to 1.5 times the screen's diagonal size — without the "screen door" effect that 1080p shows at the same distance (1.5 to 2.5 times).
