How to make a seamless Instagram carousel

Instagram will not accept one ultra-wide image. A panorama crop splits it into equal slides, so when followers swipe, the picture continues from one slide into the next.

  1. Upload a wide photo. Drop it on the canvas, paste it, or tap Upload. The tool suggests a slide count from the photo's width so slides are not stretched.
  2. Run Smart Crop. It finds the busiest, most detailed area of the picture and centers it, so faces and subjects are less likely to land on a seam. Then drag or pinch to fine tune.
  3. Pick 4:5 portrait. It uses the most screen height in the feed. Choose 1:1 or 3:4 if that suits your photo better.
  4. Test the swipe. Open Swipe Test and drag through the phone. If an object is cut awkwardly, nudge the photo and test again.
  5. Download and post in order. Files are numbered. In Instagram, tap the multi-select icon and select slides in order 01, 02, 03…

Panorama carousel

Landscapes, skylines, interiors and product spreads that need more width than one frame gives you.

Grid post generator

Turn one image into 3, 6, 9 or 12 tiles that assemble into a large picture on your profile.

Smart crop and fill or fit

Fill crops to the frame. Fit shows the whole photo with colored bars when you cannot afford to lose edges.

Private by design

All work happens in your browser tab. No upload, no account, no watermark.

// 02 · algorithm

How to get more likes: the Instagram algorithm in 2026

Nobody outside Instagram can see the ranking code, so treat this as a practical reading of what Instagram has said publicly and what creators consistently observe. Test it on your own account.

Watch time and swipes

Instagram has said that time spent and interaction with a post matter. A carousel gives people a reason to keep swiping, and each swipe is a deliberate action.

Sends and saves

Shares to friends in DMs and saves are strong "this was worth it" actions. Make slides worth sending: a map, a checklist, a before and after.

Likes relative to reach

It is the rate that counts, not the raw number. A focused post for a small audience beats a vague post for everyone.

Hook on slide 1

The first slide decides whether anyone swipes. Put the strongest part of your panorama there, with a clear subject and no clutter.

A second chance

Creators report that Instagram may show a carousel again, sometimes starting on a later slide, to people who skipped it. Strong later slides help.

Original over repost

Instagram has said it favors original content. Use your own photos, add a caption with real context, and use a few relevant keywords instead of hashtag walls.

Reality check. No format guarantees reach. A seamless panorama earns attention because it feels interactive. The rest is still photo quality and who you are posting for.

Instagram carousel ideas and post inspiration

Stuck for what to make? Each of these works well with the splitter.

The endless skyline

One wide city or coast photo split across 3 to 5 slides. Leave a small element, like a bird or a car, that "travels" across slides.

Object crossing the seam

Let a bridge, a train or a horizon line pass from slide to slide. The swipe becomes the effect.

Story in a strip

Design a long timeline: a process, a trip route or a recipe, with a headline on slide 1 and a call to action on the last.

Before and after pan

Left half is the before, right half the after, with the seam as the reveal. Swiping does the wipe.

Giant type

Print one huge word across three slides. Keep letter edges away from the exact seam so nothing looks clipped.

Product lineup

Photograph a row of products on one backdrop and split so each slide features one item with consistent spacing.

Photo dump with a theme

Use Fit mode with one background color so mixed photos still look intentional.

Map or route

Draw a trip on a long map and let people swipe along it. Add a place name on each slide.

Data scroll

A long chart or timeline split into slides, with the key number on slide 1 as the hook.

// 04 · profile makeover

Instagram grid strategy for a profile makeover

A planned grid is a first-impression tool. It does not replace good individual posts, so use it for launches, portfolios and brand moments.

Post in the right order

  • Tile 01 (bottom-right) goes up first.
  • Tile 09 (top-left) goes up last.
  • Files are named post-01, post-02… so you never guess.

Keep it aligned

  • Each new post pushes the rest one slot right.
  • Post grid tiles in a batch, close together.
  • Plan the next posts in multiples of 3.

Mind the 3:4 preview

Instagram's profile grid currently previews posts as tall 3:4 thumbnails. If the grid has to line up exactly, choose the 3:4 ratio here, and check the Profile Preview tab.

Use a pinned post

You can pin posts to the top of your profile. Pin a title tile or your best carousel and let the grid sit beneath it.

Grids look best with a simple, high-contrast image. Fine detail gets lost in a small thumbnail.
// 05 · workflow

Canva Instagram carousel template: design once, then split

You can use Canva as your design tool and this page as the slicer. That gives you one continuous canvas, so elements can cross the seams freely.

  1. Create a custom size. Width = slides × 1080, height = 1350. For 3 slides use 3240 × 1350. For 5 slides, 5400 × 1350.
  2. Add guides every 1080 px. Keep text and faces away from those lines, and let backgrounds and shapes flow across them.
  3. Export as PNG. Pick the highest quality. Do not resize it afterward.
  4. Open it here. Upload the export, keep Fill mode and 4:5, and check the slide count matches.
  5. Test the swipe, then download. Post the slides in order.
Size limit. Design tools cap custom canvas dimensions, so very wide canvases (about 7+ slides at full size) may not fit. Check your tool's current limit, or design at half size, for example 540 × 675 per slide, and export at 2× if available.

Instagram image sizes and aspect ratios

These are the values this tool uses. Instagram can change its rules, so confirm in the app before a big campaign.

FormatSizeRatioBest for
Portrait carousel / post1080 × 13504:5Most feed space on phones. Best default.
Tall / profile grid1080 × 14403:4Matches the current profile grid preview.
Square1080 × 10801:1Classic grid tiles and simple posts.
Landscape1080 × 5661.91:1Wide cinematic frames. Smaller in feed.
Story / Reel cover1080 × 19209:16Full-screen vertical. Not used by the splitter.

Slide limit

Instagram currently allows up to 20 items per carousel. This tool exports 2 to 20.

File type

JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with flat color or text. Both export at full 1080 px width here.

Same size every slide

The first slide sets the ratio for the whole carousel, so mixed sizes get cropped. The splitter keeps them identical.

// 07 · troubleshooting

Instagram carousel gap fix and common problems

There is a visible line or gap between my slides

A faint break at the swipe is normal, because Instagram shows one slide at a time with its own transition. To make it less noticeable:

• Keep text, faces and thin lines away from the exact seam.
• Let backgrounds, skies and large shapes cross it.
• Export every slide at exactly 1080 px wide. Never resize them afterward.
• Avoid white or black borders near the edges.

My slides are in the wrong order

Instagram uses the order you tap in the picker. Select 01 first, then 02, 03… and check the numbers shown on the selected thumbnails before you continue.

The image looks blurry or soft after upload

Start from the largest original, not a screenshot or a messaging-app copy. In Instagram's settings, turn on the high-quality upload option. Slides here are at least 1080 px wide, so heavy enlargement of a small original will look soft.

Instagram cropped my slides

Instagram only supports certain ratios. Stay with 4:5, 3:4, 1:1 or 1.91:1, and keep the same ratio on every slide.

My grid shifted after I posted something else

Each new post moves all existing posts one slot. Post grid tiles in one batch. If it shifts, plan the next grid so rows complete with the shifted layout, or archive the stray post.

The download did not start on my phone

Use the "Save to phone" button, which opens the share sheet so you can save to Photos. If it is not shown, your browser does not support sharing files, so use the ZIP or download tiles one at a time.

Carousel ideas for real estate, photographers and small business

Real estate Instagram marketing

Split a wide room or a street view into 3 slides, then follow with floor plan, kitchen and price. Add the area name on slide 1.

Photographers

Show a landscape as one continuous frame, then include a detail crop. Panoramas set you apart in a crowded feed.

Restaurants and cafes

Pan across a table spread or a counter. End with hours, location and a booking call to action.

Fashion and ecommerce

Photograph a collection side by side, then split so each slide features one piece with the price in the caption.

Travel and tourism

A route or coastline across 5 to 7 slides, with a place name on each, makes a save-worthy guide.

Artists and designers

Show a mural or a long illustration as one piece, then the process in later slides. Great for portfolios.

Fitness and coaches

Use a long timeline or progress strip. Each slide is a step, and the last one invites a DM.

Events and venues

A wide crowd or stage shot as a carousel, followed by date, lineup and ticket info.

Educators and B2B

A long process diagram split into slides. Each slide teaches one step, and people save it for later.

Your photos never leave your device

Many free online tools upload your images to a server. This one does not.

How it works

The cropping, slicing and ZIP packaging all run in JavaScript inside your browser tab using HTML5 Canvas. There is no upload endpoint to send a photo to.

How to verify

Open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and load a photo. You will see no image upload request. You can also turn off your internet after the page loads, and the splitter keeps working.

What loads from the internet

The page itself, and a small ZIP-packing library (JSZip) fetched from a public CDN the first time you export. It receives none of your images.

Close the tab, it is gone

Nothing is saved. Refreshing the page clears your photo and settings.

Instagram splitter FAQ

What is the best size for an Instagram carousel panorama?

Use 4:5 portrait at 1080 x 1350 px per slide. It fills the most vertical space on a phone feed. Keep every slide the same size, because Instagram uses the first slide's ratio for the whole carousel.

How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?

Instagram currently allows up to 20 photos or videos in one carousel. This tool splits a photo into 2 to 20 slides.

In what order do I post a 3x3 grid?

Post tile 01 first and tile 09 last. Tile 01 is the bottom-right tile and tile 09 is the top-left tile, because Instagram puts your newest post at the top-left of your profile.

Why did my grid get shifted after I posted something else?

Profiles show 3 posts per row. Every new single post pushes all existing tiles one slot to the right. Post in multiples of 3 to keep a grid aligned, or accept a shift and plan the next grid around it.

Why is there a visible gap or line between my carousel slides?

Instagram does not render slides edge to edge, so a faint break between swipes is normal. Avoid putting text, faces or thin lines exactly on a seam, and keep every slide the same pixel size so nothing is rescaled.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Cropping, slicing and ZIP creation all run inside your browser with HTML5 Canvas. Your photo never leaves your device.

Does the splitter reduce my image quality?

Slides are exported at 1080 px wide as maximum-quality JPG or lossless PNG. If your source is smaller than the output, it is enlarged, so start from the largest original you have.
