What is a Blogger XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the public URLs of your blog so search engines can find them and see when they changed. Google, Bing and other search engines read the same standard format.

A map of your blog

Each post and page gets one entry, so crawlers do not depend only on links to find new content.

Freshness signals

An accurate lastmod date tells search engines which pages changed, which helps them recrawl the right URLs.

A hint, not a guarantee

Submitting a sitemap helps discovery. It does not force Google to index every page.

Sitemap tags explained

Every sitemap uses the same few tags. Here is what each one does and whether Google cares about it.

TagWhat it doesUsed by Google?
urlsetThe wrapper around every URL entry in the file.Required
locThe full address of one page, including https://.Required
lastmodThe date the page last changed meaningfully.Yes, if accurate
changefreqA guess at how often the page changes. No, ignored
priorityA relative importance score from 0.0 to 1.0.No, ignored

One sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Bigger blogs split into several files.

How to submit your Blogger sitemap

Blogger cannot host a custom sitemap file, so you submit its built-in sitemap paths. The Search Console tab above lists exactly the ones your blog needs.

Generate

Enter your blog URL, pick what to include and press Generate XML Sitemap.

Copy the Search Console paths

Open the Search Console tab and copy the list. Each line is one sitemap you should submit.

Open Search Console

Choose your blog property, then open Indexing and Sitemaps. Menu names can change, so look for the same wording.

Submit each path

Paste only the part after your domain, for example sitemap.xml, and press Submit.

Check the status

After a day or two the status should show Success, with a discovered page count close to your post count.

Blogger built-in sitemap vs generated file

Both are useful. Submit the built-in one to Google and keep the generated file for audits.

Common Blogger sitemap errors and fixes

If Search Console or this tool reports a problem, start with this list.

Open the sitemap in a browser

Visit yourblog.blogspot.com/sitemap.xml. If it loads, the file is fine and Search Console just needs time.

Check the site feed setting

In Blogger open Settings and set Site feed to Full or Short. A disabled feed stops this tool from reading your posts.

Make sure the blog is public

Private or gated blogs cannot be read by the generator or by Google.

Match the property

Submit under the property that matches your domain exactly, such as the .blogspot.com version.

ErrorFix
Couldn't fetchWait a day, then resubmit. Confirm the URL opens in a private tab.
Sitemap could not be readCheck that you pasted only the path, such as sitemap.xml.
Fewer URLs than postsSubmit every paged sitemap path from the Search Console tab.
Submitted URL blocked by robots.txtRemove the rule that blocks it. Blogger blogs normally block only /search.
Wrong domain in URLsUse the .blogspot.com address, not a country domain.
Generator cannot read feedEnable the site feed and confirm the blog is public.

Sitemap tips for Blogger SEO

Small habits that keep your sitemap useful.

List only indexable URLs

Keep thin search and date pages out of your sitemap so it points to content worth ranking.

Keep lastmod honest

Change the date only when the content really changes. Fake dates can make search engines trust the field less.

Pair it with robots.txt

Add your sitemap lines to a clean robots file. Build one with the Robots.txt Generator for Blogger.

Resubmit after clean-ups

After deleting or merging many posts, check the sitemap status again in Search Console.

Update after a domain change

If you move to a custom domain, submit the sitemap for the new property as well.

Keep private pages out

Drafts and private posts are never listed. Do not rely on a sitemap or robots.txt to hide sensitive content.

Blogger sitemap generator FAQ

Short answers to the questions people search most.

What is a Blogger XML sitemap?

It is an XML file that lists the public URLs of your Blogger blog so search engines can discover them and see when they changed.

Does Blogger create a sitemap automatically?

Yes. Blogger serves /sitemap.xml for posts and /sitemap-pages.xml for static pages. Larger blogs may need several paged sitemap files, and the Search Console tab lists them.

How do I submit a sitemap for a Blogger blog?

Open Google Search Console, go to Indexing then Sitemaps, paste the sitemap path such as sitemap.xml and press Submit.

Can I upload my own sitemap.xml to Blogger?

No. Blogger does not allow files in the site root, so submit the native sitemap URLs. Use the generated file for audits or hosting elsewhere.

Does the generator work with a custom domain?

Yes, if the blog is public and its site feed is enabled. For blogspot addresses that redirect to a country domain, use the .blogspot.com version.

Does Google use priority and changefreq?

No. Google ignores both. An accurate lastmod date is the useful field, so the generator turns priority and changefreq off by default.

Is the sitemap generator free and private?

Yes. It is free and runs in your browser. Your blog URL and the generated files are not stored or sent to another server.

Ready to build your sitemap?

Enter your blog URL, copy the Search Console paths and submit them in a minute.
